Cancel Southwest Flight: Cancelling a flight is not enjoyable. Most airlines charge hefty change fees and extend a little-to-no refund for a canceled flight.
Luckily, Southwest (my favorite airline for the Caribbean and domestic travel) does not charge any change or cancellation fees! Yep, you read that right: no charges!
There is no catch as long as you know how it works. Normally, if you cancel a flight which you paid money for, you’ll find all your money back in a credit (known as a travel fund by Southwest). If you paid for your ticket using Rapid Rewards points, you would find a full points refund.

Southwest Airlines does lots of things right. No luggage fees, an easy-to-use frequent flyer program, amazing customer support, and NO change or cancellation fees. If Southwest flies to where I am going, I choose Southwest.
The cancellation policy is one of the very best in the industry. Even though it’s generous, it changes only a bit by the sort of ticket you buy.
Wanna Get Away tickets would be the cheapest cost fares that Southwest offers, and probably what many of us reserve for individual travel. These tickets have marginally tighter rules about flight cancellations than Company Select or Anytime fares, but it is still a fairly generous policy.
If you cancel a Wanna Get Away fare that you bought with money (I mean, a credit card!), the whole purchase price will be saved as reusable travel funds for future use.
You can cancel all of the ways up to ten minutes before your flight. The travel funds must be used within 1 year of the purchase date of the ticket. But if you telephone Southwest directly, they will frequently reinstate expired travel funds for a $100 fee.
Should you cancel a Wanna Get Away fare which you bought with Quick Rewards points, you’re going to get all your points back into your Southwest account. Any taxes associated with the ticket ($5.60 each way on national flights) will be held as reusable travel funds.
If you do not cancel your Wanna Get Away ticket within 10 minutes of the flight and are a no-show, you won’t get a refund of any kind.
Cancel Southwest Flight – Complete Refund Process
Company Select and Anytime tickets provide a more generous cancellation policy than na Get Away tickets, but these tickets are more expensive. Senior fares also include the identical lax cancellation policy.
Should you cancel a Business Select, Anytime, or Mature ticket, 100% of your purchase price will be refunded to your original form of payment. This applies to both money and Quick Rewards points tickets.
If you’re a no-show for a Business Select, Anytime, or Senior ticket (meaning that you did not cancel at least 10 minutes before take-off), the purchase price of your ticket will be converted into travel funds, which may be used for a different flight (within 12 months from the initial purchase date). If you used Quick Rewards points, all points will be redeposited into your account.
If you make a change to an existing flight, this makes the ticket non-refundable. If you will need to make an extra change or cancellation, your purchase price will be held as reusable travel funds rather than being refunded. It’s ideal to cancel your original flight and re-book a fresh one to keep the ticket’s completely refundable standing.

The Dallas-based carrier will “tactically” cancel flights with few bookings a few days until they run through June, Southwest president Thomas Nealon said during an earnings call on Tuesday. Only about 10 percent of the airline’s scheduled flights will be canceled in this manner as part of an attempt to further cull capacity.
“It is a lot easier to take capacity out than to put it back in,” he explained on why Southwest chose for close-in flight cancellations. Demand has hit record low levels with earnings down up to 95% year-over-year in April and May, Nealon noted.

The capacity cuts are required. Southwest is fresh off its first quarterly pre-tax loss in more than a decade, reporting a $144 million pre-tax loss during the three months ending in March on Tuesday. It’s cut flying up to 70 percent from previously published schedules in April, between 60% and 70 percent in May, and approximately 50 percent in June.
Flights eliminated from Southwest schedules include those in “shoulder” periods, or before 7 a.m., and following 8 pm local time. Additionally, it’s reduced its favorite Hawaii support to two daily flights between Honolulu (HNL) and Oakland (OAK).
Regardless of the cuts, the airline only expects filling about 6 percent of seats in April, and between 5% and 10% in May. This is far below the more than 86 percent of chairs that Southwest full of the next quarter of 2019.
“To date, capacity cuts haven’t been enough,” Cowen analyst Helane Becker on Southwest wrote on April 20. She added they anticipated further reductions as demand sat near zero.
